Notice needs, not labels
Sensory & communication support
Every person is different. Offer choices and follow what they tell or show you; these ideas can’t diagnose or explain an individual’s needs.
Sound
Ask whether a quieter spot, fewer voices or a familiar sound would feel better. Don’t assume silence suits everyone.
Light & visual load
If welcomed, reduce visual clutter or offer a less bright space. Keep an easy way to leave or change the plan.
Touch & space
Ask before touching. Offer space or closeness as a choice. Never require sensory tools or physical contact.
Communication
Use fewer words and extra time. Offer simple choices; respect speech, gestures, writing, silence or other ways a person communicates.
For ongoing concerns, ask the person what works for them and seek individual advice from a qualified professional. Read our guide for waiting for an assessment.
